COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ACC Leaf & Limb crews will finish work in Area C and begin leaf collection in Area D the week of Sept. 15 using a planned schedule for the fall cleanup in Athens.  Athens-Clarke County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Board of Education debated a new policy that would involve staff, parents, and community members in decisions during a meeting yesterday; some members praised its aspirational language while others argued it duplicated existing oversight—voting to send the policy back to the district for revision.  WUGA
  • The University of Georgia held its annual Ramsey Palooza event on Sept. 11 at the Ramsey Student Center in Athens, Georgia. The event had stand-up paddleboarding + rock climbing + wheelchair basketball + inflatables + fitness classes + retro video games, and the first 1,500 students received a free T-shirt + free Chick-fil-A sandwich.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Brian Kemp swore in his daughter Lucy Kemp as a Georgia State Trooper on Sept. 5 at the Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth—she ranked at the top of a class of 30 cadets. Lucy, an Athens Academy graduate now assigned to Clarke Post 32 in Athens, completed 22 weeks of academy instruction and 12 weeks of field training.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Local residents in Five Points collected over 1,800 signatures to stop the USPS from closing the post office branch by September 30—organizers and Rep. Mike Collins are urging federal officials to reconsider the plan.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia will end its labor and delivery unit next month due to financial and staffing pressures — maternity services will be moved to its main hospital in Athens as part of a restructuring plan. The hospital said patients have been notified and will receive support during the transition as emergency obstetric care continues at Lavonia with higher-level cases transferred by ambulance.  FOX 5 Atlanta
