Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 8th of December.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Historic Athens has sent a letter to the UGA Board of Regents urging a pause on altering the WPA-era Legion Pool at Legion Field — the site is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places — so that preservation alternatives can be evaluated. Nearly 2,000 community members have signed the petition, and a public hearing is scheduled today at 5:15 p.m. at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center on Riverbend Road.  The Red & Black
  • Federal agencies invested $783 million in Georgia last year, with UGA receiving $76 million to fund research and create jobs in Athens. Planned NIH and NSF budget cuts may reduce this support, which is key to local growth (every $1 invested generates $2.50 in economic growth).  Classic City News

  • A local taste tester compared pies from five fast food drive-thrus in Athens today during the holiday season — Whataburger’s apple pie was rated highest for its authentic flavor, while other selections ranged in price from $1.50 to $2.29.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Families in Athens can take holiday photos with Santa at stores including Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bass Pro Shop and Petco. Each location offers free sessions and special discounts during the season, so check with your local store for details.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson spoke about the growth of the Bulldogs defense after their 28-7 SEC Championship win on Dec. 6 in Atlanta.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Georgia Bulldogs are set to play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 1 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans with kickoff at 8 p.m. ET — tickets start at $207 and lower terrace seating is available.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Coach Kirby Smart said it remains uncertain if wide receiver Colbie Young will return from a broken leg to play in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 because his recovery is ongoing, while the team also monitors running back Chauncey Bowens and nickel back Joenel Aguero for other injuries.  Athens Banner-Herald
