CULTURE NEWS

  • Goose will headline Athens’ Jam in the Streets festival on Washington Street on March 28 with acts like Moon Taxi and Slater Nalley, and the 12-hour event will raise funds for melanoma research.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens celebrated its annual Downtown Parade of Lights on Dec. 4 — a festive event that filled downtown streets with holiday décor and creative displays. The photo gallery shows moments from this beloved local tradition.  WUGA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clarke County School District held Tuesday public hearings to revive the West Broad Street School campus for Athens Community Career Academy. The plan calls for renovating classrooms, labs and community spaces with engineer selection and Board findings in January (honoring its role as a historic Black school center).  WUGA
  • UGA will hold a public hearing on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center auditorium (315 Riverbend Road) to discuss replacing Legion Pool with a green space, amphitheater and parking, following a September proposal that cited near $90,000 annual loss and sparked a petition with 2,000 signatures.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Social Security checks in December will follow the standard schedule by birthdates, with SSI recipients receiving an extra payment on Dec. 31 after already receiving their December payment on Dec. 1 (covering January benefits). SPORTS NEWS

  • The Georgia Athletic Association seeks $390,000 from former player Damon Wilson after he left a $500,000 NIL deal when he transferred to Missouri in January. Wilson, who was served a summons on Nov. 25 (in Missouri), has 30 days to reply to the arbitration demand filed in Superior Court.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On Dec. 4, host Allison Mawn talked with sports editor Owen McDaniel about Georgia football’s post‐season outlook — including the SEC championship. Their conversation explained what local fans might expect as the season unfolds.  The Red & Black
