COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, nearly fifty community members gathered on Branch Street as Habitat for Humanity dedicated its second home for the Micah’s Creek Homeownership Opportunity Project—an effort to provide more affordable housing in east Athens. The new owners, a Black family of four, received keys, a bible, and blankets and the project plans to build 61 more homes for families, veterans, and college students facing housing challenges.  The Red & Black

CULTURE NEWS

  • Last Friday at 10:15 a.m., fans lined Baxter Street to see UGA alum Megan Moroney at Raising Cane’s—she served chicken tenders and announced her album Cloud 9 will be released next February.  WUGA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that regular fuel prices in the Lower Atlantic region fell to an average of $2.78 per gallon last week from $2.82 per gallon the week before + the regional price is about 9% lower than the national average.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Nov. 13, the Clarke County Board of Education met and named Timothy Pritchett as Teacher of the Year and Brian Smith as Support Professional of the Year at Barnett Shoals Elementary, and they shared HR updates that showed a 99.2% teacher fill rate and increased retention (37.51% of the staff are people of color) while noting that work on Gaines Elementary and West Broad Street School is underway (the board will meet again on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.).  The Red & Black
  • The Clarke County School District will host two public meetings on Tuesday, Dec. 2—at 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall at 595 Prince Avenue in Athens to share its vision for the historic West Broad School complex. Questions should be emailed by Dec. 1 to [email protected] and anyone unable to attend can watch the live or recorded session on the CCSD YouTube channel.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A local woman said that nearby construction caused flooding that destroyed her home’s foundation—she reported being caught between finger pointing from GDOT and city leaders. Officials have yet to confirm the cause of the damage.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Derek Dooley, an Athens native and son of UGA legend Vince Dooley, entered the U.S. Senate race earlier this year to challenge career politicians and reduce government waste. He promises to cut regulations, boost energy innovation, improve rural healthcare, and enhance workforce training—changes he says will deliver real results for Georgia.  The Red & Black

  • Five major grocery companies in Georgia offer full Thanksgiving meal deals under $50—Walmart, Target, Aldi, Kroger and Amazon Fresh list meals with turkey, stuffing, sides and same-day pickup options.   • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services has announced a mindful planetarium event for adults at Sandy Creek Nature Center's Planetarium on November 22 from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.—attendees will enjoy quiet music, stargazing, and coffee and tea served before and after the session.
