COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights is scheduled for December 4 at 7 p.m. The parade, themed 'Cooking up a Great Holiday,' will feature judged float competitions, chef Peter Dale as parade marshal, and Santa Claus lighting the Christmas tree at City Hall—information provided by Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Athens Downtown Development Authority.  Athens-Clarke County
  • Firefly Trail Inc. opened a photo contest for trail users on November 13 to celebrate the planned multi-use path—John Kissane said the contest aims to capture fun and scenic shots. Entries in two categories will be judged for prizes and displayed at the Winterville Cultural Center in February while local officials work to resolve land acquisition for the Athens section.  WUGA

  • Some Georgia retailers have started early Black Friday deals as Walmart offers discounts from November 14 to 16 while other stores plan their sales later this month — Black Friday is set for November 28.   • Today, New West Records announced that Drive-By Truckers will release their 4-LP box set Definitive Decoration Day tomorrow and reunite with Jason Isbell for a special performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Dec. 2—local fans can pick up a limited HeAthens edition at the New West Records office.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District announced its 2025-26 REACH Scholars, selecting five eighth grade students through a detailed application and interview process to receive academic scholarships and mentoring support under the REACH Georgia program. The students had signing ceremonies at their schools and will be formally recognized at the Board meeting on Dec. 11 + they will receive a $10,000 scholarship with opportunities for matching by many Georgia colleges.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Marshall Shepherd from UGA said climate change is causing more extreme weather—more heat waves, heavy rainstorms and drought—that shows human activity is intensifying natural shifts. HEALTH NEWS

  • New research from the University of Georgia showed that medical marijuana may lower opioid prescriptions—one study reported a 16% drop in opioid use and another found that opening dispensaries produced even larger reductions among cancer patients.  WUGA
  • Athens-Clarke County Courthouse was closed today and yesterday as a precaution after a visitor showed signs of bedbugs — local officials advise residents to reduce clutter and check used furniture to help prevent these pests from entering homes.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • The University of Georgia volleyball team beat LSU 3-1 on Nov. 12 at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens — the win highlighted strong team play in a competitive match.  The Red & Black
  • On Thursday night, Kirby Smart named his Mount Rushmore of Georgia football players on his radio show by choosing Stetson Bennett for his national titles, Travon Walker as the top draft pick, and Nakobe Dean for his leadership while letting Nick Chubb and Sony Michel share a spot. He also mentioned past stars Jake Scott and Scott Woerner and recalled elite defensive backs Ben Smith and Champ Bailey—comments that show his deep ties to Georgia football.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On October game day, UGA Police and transit drivers began work early to set up hydraulic barricades and bus routes at Sanford Stadium — a coordinated effort built on year-round planning — to secure over 93,000 fans for a smooth game day.
