COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chess and Community hosted its third annual Classic City Chess-a-thon in downtown Athens on November 8—which served as a fundraiser for programs in chess, robotics, debate and civic leadership education while drawing in residents of all ages. Local players joined matches at various city venues to support community programs and enjoy the spirited event.  The Red & Black

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Normal Hardware announced on November 3 that it will close permanently on December 31 — the store will offer a 30% discount on purchases over $30 until its closing. It has served Athens for 76 years and its closure marks the end of a local era.  The Red & Black

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Georgia Fashion Design Student Association hosted its fall runway show 'Hollywood Showgirl: All Eyes on Us, All Eyes on You' at Morton Theatre on November 8 — UGA students designed, modeled and assembled every outfit.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11, the Athens Regional Library will host a preview of PBS's documentary series 'The American Revolution' at the Appleton Auditorium from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.—a screening followed by a discussion with local veteran retired colonel Lawrence Saul that leads into the program’s PBS debut on November 16 and the upcoming 250th anniversary events in 2026.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football will host Texas at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. and ticket prices start at $302 on StubHub, $413.82 on Ticketmaster, and $343 on VividSeats (prices may change).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens-area high school football teams advance to the GHSA state playoffs for fall — first-round games start Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with championships set for Dec. 15–17 at Mercedes Benz Stadium.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia basketball hosted Morehead State on November 9 at 2 p.m. from Stegeman Coliseum—marking the teams' first meeting as the game was broadcast on SEC Network.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Athens Rock Lobsters beat the Monroe Moccasins 6—2 at Akins Ford Arena in Athens on Saturday, Nov. 8. The team secured the win with strong plays throughout the game.  The Red & Black
