COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since SNAP benefits ended on Nov. 1 because of the government shutdown — local groups like UGA's English department and the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia are holding food drives to help residents and students who need support.  The Red & Black
  • Tributes have poured in for 22‑year‑old Clarke Central graduate Antonio Jewell, who was found dead Friday night at The View at NODA near downtown Athens and is under investigation by Athens‑Clarke County Police Department—community members honor his memory and send heartfelt condolences to his family.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District received the Georgia Charter System Foundation’s 2025 Leadership Development Award on November 5 in Athens — the honor recognizes its Leader in Me program and TED-Ed Student Talks initiative that boost student leadership skills. The district uses local governance teams and innovative strategies to support student achievement — the award highlights its ongoing commitment to excellence.  The Red & Black
  • Host Allison Mawn visited the UGA Visitors Center to join a campus tour and speak with tour guides and prospective students. UGA is holding Family Weekend from Nov. 6 through Nov. 9—featuring tailgates, tours, concerts and games for families.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation closed lanes on SR 316 from Julian Drive to the SR 10 Loop for paving work — closures began at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov 7 and will continue until 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov 9 so drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes.  The Red & Black
  • Today, three mayoral candidates—school board members Tim Denson and LaKeisha Gantt and contender Mara Zúñiga—will debate at Ciné from 5—7 p.m. while Commissioner Dexter Fisher declined to join the debate due to vocal cord surgery and is on voice rest until Monday.  Flagpole

SPORTS NEWS

  • On November 6, the University of Georgia women's basketball team beat Furman 91—45 at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens. The victory lifted team spirit as key players scored many points—fueling the win.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia football will play Mississippi State today at Davis Wade Stadium with kickoff at Noon ET plus the game is broadcast on ESPN. Mississippi State, coming off a SEC win against Arkansas, will try for back-to-back wins while Georgia chases a playoff spot.  Athens Banner-Herald
