COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia is bracing for a delay in SNAP benefits that could push nearly 70,000 neighbors into food emergency. The organization will boost food purchasing by 400 percent and double mobile pantry services, building on a 45 percent increase in food mobilization compared to last year.  Classic City News
  • Lay Park will host Nerf Wars on November 6 with one session for ages 5-8 from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. and another for ages 9-12 from 7:00 to 7:45 p.m., costing $5 for ACC residents and $7.50 for non-residents—online registration is underway.  Classic City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens-area clay artist Alice Woodruff died on Oct. 29 after battling breast cancer, and she was renowned for her 'Warrior Women' sculptures shown at the Taylor-Grady House. She also established a fund to support Canopy Studio’s outreach efforts—leaving behind her daughter and granddaughter.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Branford Marsalis Quartet will perform at Hodgson Concert Hall on Sunday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. (A free pre-performance talk will run in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m.)  Classic City News
  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services will lead a history walk in Dudley Park on November 8 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.—the free event will show how local public spaces evolved over time for people 18 and older. People can register online and call 706-613-3620 for more details.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A French delegation led by Consul General Anne-Laure Desjonquères visited the University of Georgia yesterday to discuss new study programs and joint research opportunities. They also talked about the Lafayette Fellowship to offer 30 American graduate students a year of study in France—aiming to build stronger academic ties.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal SNAP benefits will freeze today if the government shutdown continues, putting many Athens-Clarke County residents and ACC students at risk—local officials and community leaders are urging the Mayor and Commission to discuss emergency funds and contingency plans at City Hall on Nov 4. Documentation related to reduced or delayed benefits should be kept for appeals, as recipients’ rights remain intact.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football will face Florida in Jacksonville this weekend after a bye week restored a full offensive line—Florida, now led by interim coach Billy Gonzales, seeks to overcome recent injuries. Analysts predict scores of Georgia 31 to Florida 20 and Georgia 35 to Florida 24 as both teams adjust their play for the rivalry game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks addressed speculation about his name being linked to the LSU AD opening—he said he has not been contacted by LSU and remains focused on leading Georgia athletics.   • Jane Wangari of Athens Christian, a sophomore who moved from Kenya in September, won the GIAA Class 3A girls cross country on Oct. 25 with a time of 17:41.87—she won all seven races she entered this season. Coach Tim Cummings said she will compete in regional and track events next month to build on her fast start.  Athens Banner-Herald
