- ➤ On Tuesday, Oct. 28, the UGA Herpetological Society and Pre-Vet Club hosted Creatures at Creature at Creature Comforts Brewing Co. in Athens where visitors saw live snakes, frogs and a turtle. The Red & Black

- ➤ Jasmine Curry, a social studies teacher at Coile Middle School, won the June Bryant Teacher of Promise award from the Georgia Council for the Social Studies at the GCSS Annual Conference in Athens on October 23—she now teaches eighth grade and advises National History Day. - ➤ On Tuesday, U.S. News & World Report released its 2026 Best K-8 School rankings that rated Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary as the top elementary school and Clarke Middle as the leading middle school in Athens — the report also evaluated schools in Oconee, Madison, Barrow and Jackson counties. - ➤ The USDA announced that SNAP benefits will not be issued November 1 because the government shutdown affects over 1.3 million Georgians + recipients can use funds already on their cards and are urged to shop ahead for food supplies. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ Athens-Clarke County Unified Government is inviting local organizations to apply as volunteer project sites for the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service—applications must be submitted by Sunday, November 16 so that service projects can be planned for January 19. WUGA
- ➤ The ACCGov Transportation and Public Works Department invites local residents to share input on future bicycle and pedestrian improvements for the Athens in Motion Master Plan through Sunday, December 7.
