COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UGA Rescue Paws held its sixth annual Fall Festival on Oct. 26 at the West Lawn of the Tate Student Center in Athens — vendors attended, dogs from local shelters and rescues were featured, and raffle proceeds benefited these groups.  The Red & Black
  • This summer, Brittany Lopez, a recent Cedar Shoals High School graduate, was named one of the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce—making her the only Clarke County honoree—and she works as the Food Access Coordinator for the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Lopez spoke with WUGA on October 27 to share her motivations and advice for young Athenians—her recognition comes amid notable changes in local community services.  WUGA
  • At today's agenda setting session, Athens-Clarke County officials debated a plan for new student housing near Hoyt Street as developer Andy Seavoy promoted added plazas, playgrounds, and public spaces—while some residents, including Micheal McClendon, expressed concerns about rising costs and reduced use of Lay Park. Commissioner Melissa Link warned that without the project, other developers might be less willing to invest in the community.  Classic City News

  • Pamoja, a University of Georgia student-founded group supporting minority students, celebrated its 55th anniversary with a night of praise, performance, and fundraising — the event took place on Oct. 25 at Ebenezer Baptist Church West and featured a documentary premiere on Oct. 26 at Memorial Hall in Athens.  The Red & Black
  • This week in Athens saw many events—Lyndon House Arts Center renamed its South Gallery for co-founder Nancy Lukasiewicz while University Union held its annual Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Tate Theatre and ACC hosted Walk Thru Boo at Lay Park. UGA teams won in softball and equestrian contests and local football, hockey, and community events like the Wild Rumpus Parade and Fright on the Firefly brought residents together.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Atlanta predicts a sunny and dry Halloween in Athens on Friday, Oct. 31 with temperatures ranging from 38 to 60, so families planning trick-or-treating should prepare a light jacket instead of heavy gear—cool conditions will end this month.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Researchers at UGA found that 10 local bat species glow green under ultraviolet light—scientists have not determined the reason and advised people to stay away from bats since they are protected by law.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County is seeking donated Christmas trees that meet specific size guidelines—about 35 feet tall with a 20-foot spread and a single trunk—to adorn downtown, with selections made by Nov. 21 and decorations starting Dec. 1. The county said the tree trunk will later be given to a local wood artist.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy is hosting its 23rd annual Pharmtoberfest health fair today outside its pharmacy building on D.W. Brooks Lawn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can receive health screenings, flu shots, and visit awareness booths if they bring their health insurance cards — Mayor Kelly Girtz will read a proclamation for American Pharmacists Month at the event.  WUGA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia coach Kirby Smart said he does not get caught up in recruiting tricks—after comedian Nate Bargatze used ESPN’s College GameDay to suggest top five-star QB Jared Curtis join Vanderbilt. Curtis re-committed to Georgia on May 5 and analyst Kirk Herbstreit noted he is verbally committed as he attended a Vanderbilt home game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Readers can vote now for the Week 11 Athens-area high school football player of the week—nominees include players from schools like Apalachee, Athens Academy, and Clarke Central who had key plays in Friday's games, and voting will end Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. Future polls will be available each Tuesday for upcoming games.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football reporter Marc Weiszer shared his thoughts on the Bulldogs' upcoming game against Florida and reviewed Kirby Smart's press conference on Monday—highlighting key expectations for the team.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • At Akins Ford Arena in Athens, the UGA women’s hockey team beat Auburn with a score of 5-4 on October 25th and 5-1 on October 26th (the matches were held on back-to-back days). The team showed strong teamwork in both games.  The Red & Black
