COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recent UGA study led by Dr. Yingying Zeng found that immigrants in rural areas face many barriers when seeking healthcare and showed that more research is needed on these challenges. Ashley Cleek of Reveal will air a segment on Friday at 1 p.m.—she will investigate a decades-old mystery involving a late-night call from Jeff Mangum of the local indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel.  WUGA

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 24, 2025, Lay Park Community Center hosted Walk Thru Boo—a Halloween event organized by ACC Gov Leisure Services—which featured an outdoor trail with candy, ghouls and friendly monsters, with volunteers from Clarke Central High School adding to the fun. The event gave local families a chance to celebrate safely in Athens.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA told the Georgia Department of Human Services that there is not enough money to give SNAP benefits if the federal shutdown continues—starting Nov. 1, SNAP cards will no longer work, though remaining funds can still be used. Recipients are encouraged to plan ahead and check their balances via ConnectEBT.  The Red & Black
  • Athens-Clarke County has invited professional artists to submit qualifications for a large scale 3D artwork at the Tallassee Road roundabout. Finalists will work with county staff and stakeholders on the design and receive a $500 fee (applications are due November 7 at 5 PM).  Classic City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local social worker in Athens urged the city to expand harm reduction measures—such as naloxone kits, tourniquets, and needle exchange programs—to help stop deadly overdoses from fentanyl. She said that improving access to these tools could give unsheltered and vulnerable people a better chance to start recovery.  Classic City News
  • Dr. Yingying Zeng of UGA published a study that shows immigrants in rural areas face more difficulties getting healthcare than those in cities. Her research review reveals key barriers and calls for more studies to improve care—paving the way for future research.  WUGA

  • The University of Georgia softball team beat Georgia State 18—0 in a fall exhibition game at Jack Turner Softball Stadium — a venue in Athens — on Oct. 24. Head Coach Tony Baldwin led the team as they prepared for the upcoming season.  The Red & Black
  • The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes defeated Oconee County 35-21 at Warrior Stadium in Athens on Oct. 24.  The Red & Black
  • On Oct. 24, the No. 1 University of Georgia equestrian team beat No. 2 South Carolina 13-6 at the UGA Equestrian Complex in Bishop — marking their Southeastern Conference opener — in a contest that featured strong performances by senior riders.  The Red & Black
