- ➤ Cathy Semeria turned her grief into community action nearly a decade after her daughter Tini died in a UGA car accident on April 27 by co-authoring a book that guides grieving mothers. She also supports the Tini Spark in the Dark Foundation and the annual Spark in the Dark 5K that raised about $20,000 on Oct 5 — marking a lasting tribute to Tini’s memory — as she mentors others through loss. - ➤ UGA's University Union opened its annual production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on Oct. 23 at the Tate Theatre in Athens—cast members performed lively scenes as audience members enjoyed the unique traditions of the show. The Red & Black

- ➤ The Clarke County School District announced on Oct. 23 that Timothy Pritchett was named Teacher of the Year and Brian Smith was named Support Professional of the Year. Pritchett will represent the district in the statewide Teacher competition + both winners were recognized for their contributions to improving classrooms and school support. The Red & Black

- ➤ The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department announced a new $800,000 rescue unit—this equipment will soon be put to work to boost emergency response in our community. The department plans to integrate the unit into its operations immediately. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ Athens-Clarke County officials discussed a student housing project near Hoyt Street during a Tuesday agenda setting session. Developer representative Andy Seavoy said the plan would add housing and public spaces—while Clarke County resident Micheal McClendon expressed concern about impacts on Lay Park. WUGA
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A panel of lawmakers wrapped up its final hearing on October 24th to debate a bill that would expand medical marijuana—Senate Bill 220 would let patients vape cannabis and raise the THC limit from 5% to as high as 50%. - ➤ Landmark Properties donated $140,000 to Athens Area Habitat for Humanity from its fourth annual Building Hope Through Homes invitational golf tournament to help build new affordable homes in the Micah’s Creek community. The event held at Chateau Elan in Braselton drew over 250 golfers and 45 corporate sponsors — Landmark said it will continue the event in future years — marking another boost for local housing efforts. - ➤ University of Georgia students living off-campus face pressure to sign or renew leases early for the 2026–27 school year as rising rents add stress. Many apartments have begun raising rent for new or renewing leases with one option increasing from $430 to $530 — a nearly 25% spike. The Red & Black
