COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Athens Salvation Army is recruiting volunteer bell ringers to work its Christmas Kettles campaign at nine local locations starting November 4. The organization will hold the Ring In Hope social on November 13 at Epting Events (1055 Barber St) with a keynote speech, silent auction, and music; tickets cost $50.  Athens Banner-Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Classic City Bank, a locally owned bank on West Broad Street started five years ago by Athens investors and bankers, was formed to give local business owners a choice beyond large banks. The bank faced COVID challenges — and has since supported schools, law enforcement, and community programs.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson County's marching band was named the best band in the Athens area with 64,697 votes representing 49.54 percent of the total—Apalachee and Jefferson followed with 57,219 and 2,530 votes respectively.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ACCGov’s Landscape Management Division is asking property owners to donate a privately-owned cedar tree for a Christmas display at City Hall this December. The tree must be about 20 feet in diameter and 35 feet tall, and donors must call 706-613-3561 by November 21—removal and transportation will be handled at no cost.  Athens-Clarke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Non-profits such as The Cottage offer free, confidential services including a 24/7 hotline, private counseling sessions and support groups for sexual violence survivors—helping all community members, including students, regain control and heal. These services are designed to meet the unique needs of each person as they begin their recovery.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • The SEC suspended longtime official Ken Williamson for the rest of the season after his performance in Auburn's 20-10 loss to Georgia on Oct. 11, with the decision announced on Oct. 23. Williamson had told the league he planned to retire at season's end.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson agreed to a contract extension in May that raises his annual pay and increases his buyout if he leaves before the end of the 2026 season—his buyout is $5 million at first and decreases each season thereafter with no penalty after 2030. The deal runs through June 30 and Johnson’s total salary is set to rise gradually through the extension.  Athens Banner-Herald
