COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Porchfest will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19 in seven historic Athens neighborhoods—more than 200 local artists will perform outdoors at houses, churches, and businesses from noon until 8 p.m.  Athens Banner-Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two cats remain missing after the Furkids Animal Rescue transport van was totaled in a six-vehicle crash on I-85 in Jackson County Monday afternoon—35 of the 37 kittens have been found, one injured kitten is receiving treatment, and the driver was hospitalized and later released.  FOX 5 Atlanta

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens will host a variety of Halloween events throughout October, featuring the Wild Rumpus Parade & Spectacle on Oct. 25 and the Boo-le-Bark costumed dog parade on Oct. 19, along with local film screenings, art shows at Flicker Theatre and Bar, live music, and haunted hayrides. Residents can also join guided ghost tours and historic walks to experience the season's festive spirit.  Flagpole
  • Aquatic Soul Band will debut its album The Soul of Athens and celebrate its anniversary with a release show at Hendershot’s on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. doors and 8 p.m. show—tickets cost between $19.28 and $59.62 and the event will feature live DJing and dancing.  Flagpole
  • Lyndon House Arts Center renamed its South Gallery as the Nancy Lukasiewicz Gallery to honor her decades of creative work in Athens—the center will celebrate the renaming on Tuesday, Oct 21 at 5:30 p.m. and open new fall exhibitions on Oct 30 with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Flagpole
  • The Vegabonds, an alternative country rock band from Alabama now based in Nashville, will tour the Southeastern U.S. on Friday, Oct. 17 at the 40 Watt Club—doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. with tickets priced at $20 in advance and $25 at the door.  Flagpole
  • Alvin Youngblood Hart will perform his Muscle Theory show at Nowhere Bar on Oct. 17—doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.—he plans to mix blues, rock, and country sounds after rising to fame from opening for Taj Mahal.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia announced that it will demolish Legion Pool, its pool house and concert stand while redeveloping Legion Field into a larger greenspace with an outdoor amphitheater and 70 new parking spaces. The project will finish in Fall 2026—reallocating student fees to better support campus needs.  Flagpole

  • Taqueria Mi Rancho at 840 Hull Road serves Michoacán cuisine with grilled chicken available on weekends and a menu featuring carnitas and all-day breakfast items while operating on varied hours during the week + TAMEZ BBQ has opened a second Watkinsville location where patrons can enjoy Texas barbecue brisket in a dining room that displays UGA memorabilia and offers Wednesday half-price kids' meals.  Flagpole

  • Some first-round GHSA state playoff volleyball games took place on Oct. 14 while other Athens-area matches will be played today after winning region tournaments—Jackson County meets Glynn Academy at 5 p.m.—and semifinals are set for Oct. 25 at LakePoint Sports Complex.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • During his press conference ahead of the upcoming No. 7 Georgia game against No. 5 Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin joked about Kirby Smart’s calorie burn on the sidelines—he added that Smart coaches passionately and is the best coach in the country.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • University of Georgia students in Athens form the Spike Squad, a fan group known for wearing shoulder pads and face paint at football games while also supporting charity work. The group began around 2010 and selects members through social events—members show their team spirit by arriving early and following long-standing traditions.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia women's basketball coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson highlighted the team's rebuild after a 13 to 19 season and key roster additions including ACC Sixth Woman of the Year Dani Carnegie during SEC Media Day on October 14th—she credited the strong family culture in state for her confidence in the new group. The Bulldogs will open their season against Alabama State on Monday, November 3rd at 5 p.m. on SEC Network.  Athens Banner-Herald
