COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens biking advocates and officials are reviewing plans to complete the Firefly Trail after Commissioner Patrick Davenport proposed delaying eminent domain for a three-mile gap north of Winterville—Lauren Blais, chair of the Athens in Motion Commission, said supporters worry the pause could slow the trail's completion.  WUGA
  • Residents of Pinewoods Estates in north Athens raised concerns at a commission meeting this week about inconsistent water access—some residents went days without clean water. Community leader Lizette Guevara urged the commission to act in search of a lasting solution.  WUGA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia's First Page chapter hosted a Banned Books Fest on Oct. 10 on Tate North West Lawn to honor Banned Books Week and highlight censorship's impact on literacy. Organizers and volunteers said the fest—featuring banned titles and interactive booths—fostered important discussions on intellectual freedom in education.  The Red & Black
  • At its Oct. 9 meeting, the Clarke County Board of Education approved the appointment of John Gilbreath as assistant superintendent of operations and the hiring of Damon Allen as director of custodial services and Randall Priest as sustainability coordinator—decisions effective immediately. The board also reviewed the superintendent search, E-SPLOST updates, and strategic plan progress while scheduling a fall retreat on Oct. 16 and a follow-up meeting on Nov. 13.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Athens residents joined the Rivers Alive cleanup at Dudley Park on Oct. 11—organizers including Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful and several municipal departments led efforts to clean rivers and streams along the Oconee River. The event was part of a statewide campaign to preserve over 70,000 miles of Georgia’s waterways.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting November 10th, Athens Transit invites local riders to join sessions across Clarke county to learn about and share feedback on a proposed service change. Sessions are scheduled for November 10th at the ACC Extension Office in Bogart from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., November 12th at the Athens-Clarke County Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m., November 13th at the Multimodal Transportation Center from 3 to 5 p.m., and November 14th at Fire Station #7 from 5 to 7 p.m. and online from 1 to 4 p.m.—check the details for your preferred location and time.  Athens-Clarke County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia beat writer Marc Weiszer shared his analysis of the Bulldogs' win over Auburn — highlighting key plays that shaped the victory.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • At Auburn, Kirby Smart said he never got an explanation for a goal-line fumble call after defensive players punched the ball (a play that reversed an apparent touchdown). Georgia drove 88 yards to end the quarter with a first down and will host Ole Miss on Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia soccer team upset No. 6 Arkansas 1—0 at Turner Soccer Complex in Athens on Friday, Oct. 10—securing a tight win.  The Red & Black
  • On Saturday, Georgia football beat Auburn 20—10 at Jordan-Hare Stadium as the Bulldogs rallied from a slow start to win with a strong third-quarter surge. The team improved to 5—1 in the SEC by using effective offense and defense to limit Auburn to 277 yards.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Week 9 of Athens area high school football saw key wins Friday night as Athens Academy scored 69 points, North Oconee edged Eastside 14-13, and Oglethorpe County upset Rabun County 28-19—while Jefferson posted a 54-0 win and teams set up additional games for upcoming contests.  Athens Banner-Herald
