BUSINESS NEWS

  • Atlanta-based Dumpling Master opened its first Athens restaurant on Sept. 29—customers can enjoy steamed Chinese dumplings served by a cute robot.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Chef Buck Lanford opened No Idea Burgers on October 10th — his restaurant serves smash burgers that locals say make their mouths water.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Weaver D’s, a staple soul food restaurant on East Broad Street, is up for sale as owner Dexter Weaver — who founded it in 1986 — prepares for retirement. The final closing date for the restaurant has not yet been set.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Singer Megan Moroney, a UGA graduate, appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers where she joked that her 2023 hit 'Tennessee Orange' brought her death threats—she said that accidentally wearing a Volunteers shirt in Nashville sparked a song that mixes college rivalry with romance. The track turns a moment of mixed team loyalty into a modern love story.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Today, Sloan Brothers—led by music conservator Sloan Simpson—released the lead single 'In a Movie' from the upcoming power-pop EP Middle-Aged Love, which will be available on November 7. The track blends catchy, movie-inspired lyrics with shimmering synth hooks and reverb-soaked guitar sounds in a focused style.  Flagpole
  • King of Prussia returns to the music scene with its single “Perfect Daze,” a song about healing from loss and family hardships that was recorded in Myrtle Beach and mixed in Athens with Patrick Doherty—Taj Hanick will perform a stripped-down set tonight at Normal Bar with songs from King of Prussia, Future Lives and SLATERQUAIDQUETZALCOTAL, joined by local acts Annie Merkley and Burly Ivy at 8 p.m. with a $10 cover charge at the door.  Flagpole
  • Wild Rumpus XVII 2025 Parade and Spectacle is set for October 25th in downtown Athens where everyone in costume is invited to join a free parade that starts with a pre-party at Creature Comforts Brewery at 5:00 p.m. and continues with a main event at 8:00 p.m. followed by a Midnight Howl after-party at Paloma Park until 2:00 a.m.—the event, organized by local artist Timi Conley to support FARM Rx, offers live music and entertainment for all ages.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia introduced new campus bus routes on Aug. 11—approved after a spring proposal to improve access and efficiency—and some students said the changes have lengthened commutes for off-campus riders while officials review feedback for future adjustments.  The Red & Black
  • The Clarke County School District Board of Education approved $142,000 for cleanup at West Broad Street School after a fire on October 2 was determined to be arson — the cleanup will include asbestos abatement and interior repairs to help prevent future vandalism.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ACCGov Animal Services Department installed three public microchip scanning stations to help anyone scan stray pets for identifying chips and reunite them with their families. The stations are located at Animal Services, Memorial Park dog park, and Southeast Clarke Park dog park (the Animal Services station is open 24/7 while the park scanners operate during park hours).  Athens-Clarke County
  • ACC Leaf and Limb Crews will finish work in Area A and begin collecting in Area B during the week of Oct. 13. The crews will complete the current phase before moving to the next—ensuring the service continues smoothly.  Athens-Clarke County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Athens-area high school football games in Week 9 were tracked with live updates on Friday as teams competed and scored—updates revealed key plays and final results. The scoreboard captured each matchup's progress and gave local fans a clear view of the action.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann signed a one year contract extension through June 30 with scheduled pay increases, and five assistant coaches received one year extensions as well. The deals were approved on Friday Oct. 10 ahead of Saturday's game.  Athens Banner-Herald
