CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Athens Folk Music and Dance Society will host its 40th annual North Georgia Folk Festival on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Sandy Creek Park—featuring live music, dance, art, and food trucks for a family-friendly event. Organizers have expanded the lineup to include a mix of folk, bluegrass, Irish, and modern acts along with an open jam tent for local musicians. Flagpole
- ➤ Annie Merkley, local psych/art rock band Burly Ivy, and Athens fixture King of Prussia will perform a special show today at Normal Bar at 8 p.m.—King of Prussia will debut its first new single since 2014 with frontman Brandon Taj Hanick leading a solo set. Flagpole
- ➤ Artist Frances Thrasher, known as Heaven4theYoung, will open her second solo exhibition 'The Uncanny Valley' at ACE/FRANCISCO Gallery on Oct. 16 with a free reception from 6—9 p.m.; her mixed media work in ceramics, oil and watercolor shows a shift toward a subtler, playful style influenced by a recent trip to Spain. - ➤ Today, Athens’ new band Drí and the Violence released a dreamy music video for 'It’s Love' recorded at Ear Bonez Studio, with lead vocalist Adriana Thomas calling it their most violent song. The six-member group is set to perform a solo set at PorchFest on Oct. 19 and a group performance along the Wild Rumpus parade route on Oct. 25 — further boosting their local presence. Flagpole
- ➤ Athens artists are busy with new music releases and local events—Sloan Brothers will drop their catchy single 'In A Movie' today while Hooker Vision’s Evans pair released a split album from June rehearsals, Monty Greene launched his electronic single 'New Energy,' Obscurity issued a two-song set, and rapper Donny Knottsville reissued his mixtape with bonus tracks. Local events include VHS Fest on Oct 12 with a market, live acts and film screening at Creature Comforts and Ciné—plus Nuçi’s Space will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a December 12 concert at Georgia Theatre. - ➤ Cliffe & Stuart Knechtle held college tour events at Tate Theatre on Oct. 6 and 7 where thousands of students asked questions about faith and life, and Athens Church organized a final session on Tuesday night at Atlanta Highway. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at UGA have asked North Georgia residents to report sightings of invasive Joro spiders online as a photo contest runs through Oct. 12—scientists continue studying their effects on local crops and ecosystems. The giant spiders, which came from East Asia, are not dangerous to people but may still impact the environment. Flagpole
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Athens-Clarke County is accepting applications for a Poet Laureate to promote poetry in schools, senior centers, and community groups — the chosen candidate will serve for two years and must be at least 18 and not a county employee; applications are due by December 5 at 5:00 p.m. WUGA
- ➤ The Athens-Clarke County Commission voted 6-3 to choose a new fire station location near the intersection of Morton Road and Old Lexington Road that will replace the station on Whit Davis Road built in 1974—$6 million from SPLOST 2020 funds the project even as some residents worry about added noise, light and traffic. - ➤ ACCgov will adjust service schedules on Monday, October 13 for Indigenous Peoples' Day. Animal Services will be closed with routine calls resuming Tuesday—parks and government offices will have holiday hours, waste collection will be delayed, and transit will operate normally. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Local nonprofit AthFest Educates will host its annual half marathon and 5K in downtown Athens this weekend. A Health and Fitness Expo will run on Oct-11 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. at the Classic Center Pavilion before the 5K, starting at 2:30 p.m. along the Firefly Trail, and the half marathon, beginning on Oct-12 at 7:30 a.m. through local neighborhoods and finishing at Sanford Stadium with local bands boosting runners. - ➤ Georgia is set to play Auburn on Saturday, Oct. 11 and experts predict close scores with some picks favoring a 24 to 20 win and others a 27 to 24 win for the Bulldogs.
