EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District announced three finalists for Teacher of the Year in Athens today—Stephanie Lewis of Cedar Shoals High School, Timothy Pritchett of Barnett Shoals Elementary, and Adrienne White of Barrow Elementary—from 22 candidates. The winner will be named on October 23 at the awards banquet.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Commissioners voted last night by a 6-3 margin to move the aging east side fire station to Lexington Road to cut emergency response times amid neighbor opposition. Fire Chief Nate Moss said the new location is a 50-year investment that will better serve the growing area.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Public Health announced that COVID-19 vaccines are available at state health departments and that additional doses have been ordered to ensure supply continuity. Walgreens and CVS now offer vaccinations for those ages 3 and older—no prescription is needed as most insurance covers the cost.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • The Athens Rock Lobsters and University of Georgia Ice Dawgs played a mixed scrimmage at Akins Ford Arena on Oct. 7. The teams were split into Black and White teams—White won 4-3.  The Red & Black
