COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local writer has submitted an open letter protesting UGA’s plan to close the historic Legion Pool to build 70 parking spaces—questioning the Working Group report’s data and urging a trial period with alternative management to keep the pool available for staff, students, and families. The letter stresses that preserving Legion Pool is key to maintaining a long-standing community resource in Athens.  Flagpole
  • Boat ramp and north fishing piers at Sandy Creek Park will close on October 11th for the North Georgia Folk Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The park gate will shut at 7:00 p.m. — that is the regular schedule.  Athens-Clarke County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of students gathered in Tate Theatre on Oct. 6 to question and listen to Cliffe and Stuart Knechtle of Give Me An Answer, a ministry that answers questions about Christianity for college students. They spoke to University of Georgia attendees again on Oct. 7 at Tate Theatre from 12 to 5 p.m.  The Red & Black
  • AthFest Educates awarded $66,031.31 in arts education grants this year to 19 local educators in Clarke County — the funds support programs for kindergarten through high school — and has given over $750,000 in total to boost arts education.  Athens Banner-Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Joro Watch has launched its 4th annual contest inviting Athens residents to capture and upload clear photos of the Joro Spider to help track its spread—over 400 sightings have been reported in Clarke County. Contest entries must be submitted online by October 12 at 11:59 p.m.—the effort is managed by UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announced it will offer winter programs for 2025-2026 that include events in arts, environmental science, recreation, sports and holiday activities for both adults and children. Residents will register online at 9 a.m. on November 1+ non-residents will register at noon on November 3.  Athens-Clarke County
  • Athens residents who experience unfair treatment at alcohol-licensed venues can file complaints under a non-discrimination ordinance passed by the Athens-Anti Discrimination Movement in November 2016. The ACC Unified Government offers a form that can be submitted online, by mail, or dropped off at the ACC Attorney’s Office — officials will review the complaint and provide updates after investigation.  The Red & Black
  • The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce will host a free, nonpartisan Political Leadership Academy on October 18 and November 1 to help potential candidates learn about campaign fundraising, marketing, and campaigning — officials will offer practical advice and explain the process of running for office.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Public Health inspected 38 restaurants in Athens from Sept 23 to Oct 7 and found eight with perfect scores, 24 with scores between 99 and 90, and six that scored 89 or below—BB.Q CHICKEN received an 80 after inspectors observed heavy pink and black mold-like growth in its ice machine behind the bar and other health violations that were later corrected. This report helps inform residents of current conditions at local dining establishments.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Georgia Department of Public Health and UGA health providers are waiting for CDC guidance before they begin giving the updated COVID-19 vaccine. Officials confirmed that leftover 2024-2025 doses must be destroyed while recommendations remain under review—vaccine availability will be updated in the coming weeks.  The Red & Black

  • Reporter Sara Tidwell spent a memorable weekend with her dad—who flew in from Michigan—to join her in Athens for a homecoming football game at East Jackson Comprehensive where the Bulldogs lost 34–7.
