CULTURE NEWS

  • During homecoming week in Athens, students attended a carnival at Legion Field, a film event at Sanford Stadium, a downtown parade, a step show at the Fine Arts Theater, and Oktoberfest at Athentic Brewing Company. UGA athletics featured a volleyball match against Texas and a football game against Kentucky where Georgia won 35-14—Kate Hacker and Jacob Harper were crowned homecoming king and queen.  The Red & Black
  • Athentic Brewing Company hosted Oktoberfest in Athens on Friday, Oct. 3. The festival featured a live polka band and traditional German food — and games for local fun.  The Red & Black
  • The National Pan-Hellenic Council hosted the Homecoming Step Show on Oct. 3 at Fine Arts Theatre during UGA Homecoming week where eight chapters performed a Netflix-themed routine—Netflix and Step. The event featured groups from local Greek organizations showcasing creative performances inspired by popular shows.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marigold Collective in Winterville paused its Fresh for Less program that helps low-income residents access fresh food because federal grants were frozen by a government shutdown—about 20 people used the program and free food remains available for those in need.  WUGA
  • Today, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will decide whether to use eminent domain to take property near the dangerous intersection of Hawthorne Avenue — Oglethorpe Avenue where over 150 crashes have occurred in five years with 60 injuries. The project will add new sidewalks, bike lanes, and slower traffic on Oglethorpe Avenue and is set to finish in spring.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A UGA study found that genetics changes how fish oil raises blood omega-3 levels, with research from over 200,000 participants showing that people with different gene types experience increases between 0.45 and 0.60 units. The study builds on previous work linking fish oil intake to better brain health and lower cancer risk — offering new insights into how genetic makeup affects supplement benefits.  Athens Banner-Herald

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Athens readers voted Insomnia Cookies as the best cookie spot in a poll held from Oct. 1 to noon on Oct. 6, with the shop earning 25.49% of 51 votes while Crumbl Cookie finished second at 19.61% — the result shows a close contest among local favorites.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Georgia soccer team played against LSU at Turner Soccer Complex in Athens on Oct. 5 and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.  The Red & Black
  • Ranked No. 9 Georgia football will travel to Auburn on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. as fans can purchase tickets online with prices ranging from $222.30 on Ticketmaster to $496 on StubHub while the Tigers plan to retire Cam Newton's jersey.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football has recorded seven sacks this season and faces questions about its pass rush on third downs ahead of Saturday’s game at Jordan-Hare Stadium—ABC analyst Jesse Palmer said the team needs creative play while Coach Kirby Smart defended his squad and pointed to strong practice efforts. The coach said he trusts his players even if the stats seem low.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football is set to play No.4 Ole Miss on October 18 at 3:30 p.m. — the game will be broadcast on ABC at Sanford Stadium.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Monroe Freeling’s ankle injury may let him return later this week—Jordan Hall should be ready to play and Earnest Greene III is working on his back; the No. 9 Bulldogs will travel to Auburn Saturday, October 11th with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on ABC.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Tini Semeria 6th Annual Spark in the Dark 5K took place at the UGA Golf Course in Athens on Oct 5 — an event that honors Christina Semeria, a UGA student who passed away in 2016 — drawing community runners and supporters.  The Red & Black
