Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 30th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week in Athens saw UGA football lose to Alabama 24 to 21, Georgia soccer tie with Florida 2 to 2 and boxers compete in a charity event. Faith groups marched to protest mass deportations and the library held a book sale — local wrestling matches and an SEC Nation broadcast added to a busy week — energizing community life.  The Red & Black

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Georgia announced a live concert—Between The Hedges—featuring Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan that will take place at Sanford Stadium. Organizers said more details about the concert date and ticket sales will be shared soon.  FOX 5 Atlanta

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Gabrielle is growing stronger in the Atlantic — and experts at UGA advise residents to review safety steps and prepare a week’s worth of emergency supplies as the calm season continues with more than two months remaining. University officials recommend checking the National Hurricane Center and local alerts and planning evacuations at least a day in advance if conditions worsen — ensuring everyone is prepared for uncertain storm impacts.  The Red & Black
  • A new UGA study found that efforts to remove eastern coyotes did not work because the animals quickly came back from nearby areas—programs costing $30,000 to $50,000 a year only lowered their numbers for a little time. Researchers at the Warnell School of Forestry suggested changing hunting rules and taking care of the land to better protect the animals that coyotes eat.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County has invited professional artists to submit qualifications for a large-scale 3D artwork at the Tallassee Road roundabout. The submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. on November 7 — applicants must include a resume, references, and examples of previous work.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia will face Auburn at night on Oct. 11 with possible kickoff times of 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. or 7:45 p.m. ET; the game will air on ESPN + ABC or SEC Network as the Bulldogs prepare to meet the Tigers, a rival they have beaten eight times in a row including a 31-13 win in Athens last season.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Georgia Bulldogs’ defense struggled in the first halves of recent SEC games against Tennessee and Alabama as they allowed a total of 45 points. Coach Kirby Smart blamed poor execution for the slow starts and said the team will adjust—aiming to improve against Kentucky on Saturday and Auburn soon.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia women's tennis player Deniz Dilek was eliminated from the ITA All American Championships round of 16 after winning the first set but losing the next two sets; she later withdrew from a consolation match due to injury.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia football fell from No. 5 to No. 12 in the AP Poll after a 24-21 home loss to Alabama. The drop ties its lowest ranking since 2021 — the Bulldogs will aim for a bounce back win over Kentucky next week.  The Red & Black
  • Readers in Athens are invited to vote for the 2025 preseason flag football player of the year as nominees were hand-picked by local coaches — the poll will remain open until Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.  Athens Banner-Herald
