COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Historic Athens announced Thursday that it did not endorse the proposed 116-room hotel at the former UGA President’s House because the plan is too large for its historic neighborhood—raising concerns that its scale and lack of preservation safeguards would harm the site’s integrity. The preservation group said that if the project makes key changes such as reducing its size and adding binding protection measures, it might then meet community standards. Flagpole
- ➤ ACC Transit invites Athens residents to join the Week Without Driving challenge from September 29th through October 5th — a fare-free transit program that lets participants experience the challenges of not driving — and better understand the daily travel choices of those who do not drive. The campaign focuses on reflection and education to promote informed decision-making about transit options. Athens-Clarke County

- ➤ Athens indie-rock band The Downstairs visited our newsroom on September 26th to perform new songs from their debut album Saprolite—music beat reporter Kaitlyn Harvey discussed how the band formed and created the album. The Red & Black
- ➤ North Georgia musician and former Athenian Scott Low has released a music video for his single 'Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad' ahead of his album Grateful Blues, a set of Grateful Dead blues covers scheduled for release Oct. 10. Low said the video shows a blend of Black and white cultural influences and he will represent Georgia at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January. Flagpole
- ➤ Hispanic Heritage Month began on Sept. 15 and runs until Oct. 15 to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans with events held in Athens. The month kicked off with the 16th annual LatinxFest on Sept. 19—bringing together community members, performers, and vendors to celebrate their heritage. The Red & Black

- ➤ The University of Georgia plans to redevelop Legion Pool and Legion Field by removing the pool, pool house, and concert stand to build an outdoor amphitheater and add 70 parking spaces—work that is scheduled to be complete by next fall. Historic preservationists from Historic Athens object to the plan, saying the pool is a key part of local history. WUGA
- ➤ U.S. News and World Report released the 2026 Best Colleges rankings on Monday—Emory University in Atlanta ranked 24th, Georgia Tech ranked 32nd and UGA in Athens ranked 46th among national universities. Athens Banner-Herald

- ➤ ACC Leaf & Limb crews will finish work in Area E and begin leaf collection in Area F the week of Sept. 29, with tasks scheduled to start after today. Athens-Clarke County

- ➤ The Jackson County Panthers began the season strong with a 5-1 record after beating Alcovy and celebrated on Thursday morning with Paul Milliken—head coach Korey Mobbs said the historic win over Clarke County marked a key moment this season. - ➤ Georgia basketball coach Mike White received a three-year contract extension last Friday, Sept. 26, after a season that led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament, and three other coaches—Drake Bernstein, Caryl Smith Gilbert and Meghan Boenig—signed new contracts that will keep them on staff until at least 2031, with Boenig under contract through 2029.
