COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Clare and Taylor Truitt started the Beauty and the Builder Foundation after facing colon cancer and a congenital heart condition and will host a gala on Friday to support victims of cancer and domestic abuse. The event aims to help those affected by these challenges.  FOX 5 Atlanta

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Commemorative Air Force will host Warbirds Ride Day at Ben Epps Airport in Athens on Saturday with rides on restored World War II-era aircraft available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fans can ride several vintage planes — including a popular P-51 Mustang — and enjoy a rare aviation event in the community.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Commerce special education teacher Wes Massey will take his class to an Athens Academy football away game Friday night—fulfilling a 20-year dream by giving students with significant challenges a chance to experience live football action and school spirit. The event is organized with support from coach Casey Kane and Commerce football coach Lenny Gregory, who provided jerseys to help the students feel part of the team.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission discussed rezoning requests and SPLOST Project 06 at a special agenda session on Sept. 16—focusing on zoning changes for several properties and a plan to move fire station #5 to improve emergency response. The consent agenda will be voted on at the regular session on Oct. 7.  The Red & Black
  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services announced today that microchip scanning stations for pets are now operating 24 hours at Memorial Park Dog Park and Southeast Clarke Park Dog Park—found animals can be scanned to help find their owners. Pet owners are urged to follow the signs for instructions and update their contact information.  Classic City News
  • The Athens-Clarke County Elections Department will begin testing all voting equipment at 10:00 a.m. on September 22 at the facility on Lexington Road—all systems will be verified and sealed until the November 4 Municipal General and Special Election.  Athens-Clarke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Research from the University of Georgia found that people who used e-cigarettes or cigarettes were at higher risk for prediabetes and diabetes—those using both had a 28% higher risk while non-white users faced greater risks. The study also revealed that regular exercise reduced risk by 8% and noted that e-cigarette use increased among youth.  WUGA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football won a 44-41 overtime game at Tennessee and will face Alabama in Athens while coach Kirby Smart said the team must fix its pass defense after allowing four touchdown passes—improvements will be addressed in practice before Saturday's game.  Athens Banner-Herald
