ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Utility bills have increased by 40% over the last five years and will keep rising as higher fuel costs and new data centers drive more energy use. • Sun Day Sunday will be held on Sept 21 in Winterville at Marigold Auditorium—the free event will run from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and will feature speakers like Commissioner Carol Myers, a panel on electric vehicles, a Firefly Trail joyride, free ice cream sundaes, and a youth photo exhibit to mark the transition to clean energy.  Flagpole

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will hold their retreat in Gainesville on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 at a venue owned by developer Jeff Payne—who is proposing a hotel at the former UGA President’s House—and the county manager’s office faces a potential conflict with a risk of losing an 80% deposit of about $6,000 if the venue is changed. This event is set after the office booked the venue a year ago, prompting concern as details of the project have come to light.  Flagpole
