  • The Mission Continues will lead a 9/11 service project with veterans and volunteers to revitalize Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary school campus on Saturday—organizers ask locals to join the effort. The project honors 9/11 by inviting community members to help improve the school grounds.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Georgia Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC held their second annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at Sanford stadium on September 11 to honor the 24th anniversary of the World Trade Center attack—participants included police, fire rescuers and UGA community members, with 9/11 survivor Greg Trevor giving remarks.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A decision by the U.S. Postmaster General to close postal units by the end of September led Athens’ Five Points community to send a petition with 1,842 signatures to keep the Add Drug unit open—Congressman Mike Collins has urged USPS to review the plan. Local residents who depend on the service continue to call on officials to reconsider the closure.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Lucy Kemp, daughter of Gov. Brian Kemp, graduated from trooper school after 22 weeks of academy training, 12 weeks of field training and 1,400 hours of advanced instruction — earning the Corporal Chadwick LeCroy Scholarship to help her pursue a degree at Reinhardt University before being assigned to Clarke Post 32 in Athens.  Classic City News

  • A poll held from Sept. 8 to 11 among 230 Athens readers showed that Bruxie won best waffles with 58.7% of the votes—more than double the votes for Waffle House at 25.2%. Bruxie, a newcomer at 311 E. Broad, has quickly become a favorite spot for local waffle lovers.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Data released on September 11 shows that Georgia football now ranks third with 55 active NFL players after opening weekend, up 10 from last year—narrowing the gap with Alabama which has 60 and Ohio State with 56.
