CRIME NEWS

  • At 8:51 p.m. on August 29th, reports of an armed shooter near the main library triggered UGA’s alert system but PUGA Police found the incident was a swatting hoax and issued an all-clear at 10:40 p.m.- UGA is investigating the false report with state and federal law enforcement.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • With students returning to campus, UGA dorm residents reported mold concerns such as yellow spots on ceilings and mildew in bathrooms—University Housing advises them to file online work requests so that assessments can promptly address the issue.  The Red & Black
  • The UGA Department of Religion launched its Spiritual Wellbeing Initiative yesterday to help students explore their calling—Dr. J Derrick Lemons and Meg Rooney described the program as a new way for young people to engage with spirituality during college.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local residents in east Athens opposed the proposed changes at Iron Triangle Plaza at Tuesday’s meeting—saying that moving a sidewalk and adding a teaching garden may lead to future apartments and higher costs for long-time community members. The Athens-Clarke County Commission will vote on the proposal in early September.  Classic City News

  • Georgia freshman offensive lineman Juan Gaston Jr. was announced as a starter for the season opener against Marshall and becomes the first true freshman to start since 2017—he is six foot seven, three hundred sixty pounds and a four-star prospect from Westlake High.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football freshman offensive lineman Juan Gaston Jr. limped off the field with an unknown injury during the first quarter against Marshall—he was taken to the locker room and replaced by redshirt freshman Daniel Calhoun. His condition is still being evaluated as the team continues the game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Gunner Stockton was announced as Georgia football’s starting quarterback ahead of their season opener on Aug. 30 in Sanford Stadium—his strong play after stepping in for an injured Carson Beck earned him a coach's vote of confidence.  Athens Banner-Herald
