  • A local nonprofit plans to launch a petition to name the park next to the Costa Building after Alf Richardson and Madison Davis—Athens’ first Black legislators who represented Clarke County in 1868. The legacy event will be held next Tuesday at noon at the Lyndon House Arts Center.  WUGA

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens man Anthony Teres Jones surrendered to police at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday after police had been searching for him since Monday for setting his girlfriend, Getrude Willis (49), on fire at their Scandia Circle home when a neighbor used a fire extinguisher to help control the blaze and Willis was hospitalized with burns.  Classic City News
  • Police said that in January 2022, after a sexual meeting arranged on Instagram—EBE gang member Ytrevious Roberson shot Miles Brown in the ankle at Chatham Park, fled a May 2022 arrest by running from a car stop and jumping into the North Oconee River, and he is set for trial on September 8 on charges of aggravated assault.  Classic City News
  • On Tuesday, FBI agents executed search warrants in Athens, Atlanta and Jefferson that arrested 13 people and seized over $900K in drugs and cash — the investigation also uncovered 26 guns including a grenade launcher along with cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana and controlled pharmaceuticals.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia hosted the first night of its Fall Engagement Fair at the Tate Student Center on Tuesday, Aug. 26—featuring over 160 student groups offering free T-shirts, food, and giveaways. The second fair will be held today at the same venue.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chipotle Mexican Grill has partnered with the University of Georgia and two other schools to offer a free food program to student athletes—each athlete will receive a special Chipotle card that gives one free entrée per week for 15 weeks. The program will support football, soccer, volleyball and other sports as the fall season progresses through December.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football coach Kirby Smart's 10th season begins with the release of the All-Kirby Smart team—25 top players were named from offense, defense and special teams, including Stetson Bennett, Nick Chubb and Rodrigo Blankenship.
