  • Big Bethel AME Church hosted Social Justice Sunday on August 24 as dozens gathered to honor the upcoming 62nd anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s March on Washington and I Have a Dream speech—church leaders urged congregants to register to vote.  FOX 5 Atlanta

CRIME NEWS

  • Jonathan Mandell Mapp, 40, of Jennings Mill Parkway, overdosed on fentanyl while driving at the intersection of Atlanta and Monroe highways and was revived by emergency responders before he was arrested, booked on DUI and suspended license charges, and denied bail for violating probation.  Classic City News
  • A police officer on North Avenue checked tags at the Apex convenience store at about 10 p.m. on August 4th and arrested Treshun Rashaad Edwards of Smokey Road after noticing a license plate mismatch on a Chrysler 300 sedan registered to a Ford Edge SUV—Edwards was later found hiding in a bathroom at a Hallmark Estates home where a search revealed a large amount of methamphetamine and opioid pills, and he now faces charges including drug trafficking, possession with intent to distribute, felony fleeing and eluding police, and motor vehicle violations.  Classic City News

  • A new list by Niche names eight colleges as the hardest to get into in Georgia — featuring Emory University with an 11% acceptance rate and schools like Georgia Tech, Point University, Spelman, UGA, Fort Valley State, Thomas University and Andrew College — using recent figures reported by the U.S. Department of Education and the institutions.   Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • A study by USA TODAY Sports of 15 college football teams in 2024 found that quarterbacks score more when lining up under center rather than in the shotgun at the goal line—teams like Georgia showed better results with the under center approach. Many offensive coordinators still favor the shotgun formation even though the study indicates a higher success rate with quarterbacks under center.  Athens Banner-Herald
