ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Aug. 11, two UGA students sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle t-bone collision at the corner of Oconee and Williams Street. Sam Puckett had emergency surgery for brain bleeds, a skull fracture and neck abrasions, while Andrew Hoffman underwent surgeries for abdominal injuries and pelvic fractures—he also withdrew from classes for the fall semester.  The Red & Black

CRIME NEWS

  • Randy Lamar Mitchell, 38, was indicted after he allegedly beat Samantha Ryan with a bat and golf club at a home on Smokey Road on May 25th—he now faces two counts each of aggravated assault and aggravated battery and is in pretrial detention awaiting arraignment on Oct 14th.  Classic City News

  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services has partnered with Triangle ArtWorks to offer a free virtual 6-week public art course for local artists—classes run on Mondays from Oct. 6 to Nov. 10, 6-8 p.m.—with applications due by Sept. 8.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers at UGA’s Wild Peanut Lab are using genetics from ancient peanuts to breed a modern nut that tastes good and grows well in tough conditions — a project that is partnering with Mars to boost peanut traits.  WUGA

  • The demolition of the Saye Building in downtown Athens ended a long dispute between commissioners, residents, and the building’s owner and led local officials to reform the review process for historic demolitions—aiming to prevent similar conflicts in the future.  WUGA
