CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested Hakim Williams after Meta glasses footage showed that he fired a round during an argument with his ex-girlfriend Amberniqueka Lawrence outside his home on Highland Park Drive — she said he reached for his gun and his actions scared her while their infant was in her car — and a relative took custody of the baby as police arrested Lawrence for simple assault.  Classic City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Abbey Road Live! performed the third concert in the Sunflower Concert Series at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens on Aug. 19, 2025—the show was moved to the Conservatory due to inclement weather. Tickets included snacks and drinks and guests were encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and picnic dinners.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Princeton Review ranked 209 colleges and named Georgia Tech as No. 1 on its Best Value Colleges list while the University of Georgia in Athens came in at No. 12— the list shows both schools are praised for strong academics and robust career prospects.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Government plans to purchase a 3.9-acre property at 4 Beech Haven Dr. for $600,000 as part of the 2020 SPLOST project to preserve historic Beech Haven Park. An ACC Mayor and Commission vote on Sept. 2 will decide the deal and allow the Arts and Crafts-style home to be converted into a park office — cutting costs and providing daily oversight.  The Red & Black
  • The Leaf and Limb Program has filled three of four vacant positions over the past two months—which allows crews to finish work in Area F early this week and begin work in Area A ahead of schedule. Residents who have not set out their material at the curb are urged to do so or call officials with any concerns.  Athens-Clarke County

  • College football fans in Athens can look forward to Nov. 1 as the season promises up to seven games between ranked teams.
