  • Last week in Athens saw potential new sorority members celebrating bid day, Clarke Central edging Cedar Shoals 13-12 in the Classic City Championship, UGA students making the letter G during Freshman Welcome, and Ciné hosting a four-day film festival of independent films—additional photos captured a Georgia soccer match and other campus activities that highlighted the local energy.  The Red & Black

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens police arrested a local couple for felony theft after private investigators spotted stolen Lululemon athletic wear at a flea market and officers later recovered over $100,000 in merchandise from the couple’s mobile home park—police are still investigating the source of the goods.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Princeton Review names seven Georgia universities on its Best 391 Colleges list—Agnes Scott College, Berry College, Emory University, Georgia Tech, Mercer University, Spelman College and the University of Georgia, which has 142 majors and a program to help students graduate faster. The list is based on student survey responses about their college experiences.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission are discussing whether to recover nearly $5 million in unspent COVID-era grants that must be used by the end of next year — county staff recommend shifting about $500k mostly to affordable housing instead of workforce development. This move is aimed at ensuring the funds are not returned to the federal government.  WUGA
  • Athens-Clarke County will create a public park on the west side by purchasing four acres at 4 Beech Haven Drive, where a historic home will serve as the park office & a multi-use trail will connect the park to Ben Burton Park. The project will transform a site that has remained unchanged for over 100 years and features an Arts-and-Crafts style house, stone bridges and garden walls along the Middle Oconee River.  WUGA

  • USA TODAY Sports released a new ranking of 136 college football teams for the upcoming season that placed Penn State at No. 1 and Georgia at No. 2—with Clemson appearing at No. 3—while other teams from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Mountain West and Group of Five round out the list.
