  • Cedar Shoals grad Tricia Gaston runs a vegan bakery called Tricia's Office from her home in Athens—she bakes allergen-free cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and donuts for pick-up or delivery, and her business has grown since it started in 2020.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackie Dorsey's exhibition Living Legends of Georgia Music opens Monday, Aug. 25 at the UGA Performing Arts Center Lobby Gallery and runs until Jan. 5 — the show honors eight local music legends including the Indigo Girls, Big Boi, and Mike Mills, with an opening reception on Aug. 28 from 5 to 6 p.m. It is part of a season of UGA Presents events featuring international touring artists.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia held its Fall 2025 Panhellenic sorority recruitment Bid Day (Aug. 17) in Athens where new members joined their chapters and returning sisters celebrated their roles. Fraternity members and passersby also took part along Milledge Avenue.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University System of Georgia requested a $3.87 billion fiscal 2027 budget that increases spending by 7.4% to support enrollment growth, campus expansion, and higher health costs—$11.9 million of which will cover startup expenses for a new medical school at UGA scheduled to enroll its first cohort next fall. The regents also approved a $197.7 million capital budget for key projects at Savannah State and on Athens’ UGA campus, with the proposals now headed to the Governor’s office and then the General Assembly.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, August 16, Clarke Central High School rallied in the second half & won 13-12 over Cedar Shoals High School in the 59th Classic City Championship at Water-Wilkins Stadium in Athens.  The Red & Black
  • UGA athletics is cracking down on student re-selling of Georgia football tickets by requiring students to bring photo ID to every home game and conduct random spot checks—if a mismatch is found, the ticket package will be voided for the season. Ticket applications are being accepted until Aug. 20 for the seven games.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett led the Rams to a 23-22 preseason win over the Chargers on August 16 by throwing for 324 yards with three touchdowns and one interception—he completed a game-winning 8‐yard pass with five seconds left—and the team rested its injured starting quarterbacks. Bennett said the win was 'pretty cool' while he gained valuable playing time in the exhibition game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia volleyball team played a red and black scrimmage at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on August 16, 2025. Photos captured key moments from the game, highlighting plays by freshman Chloe Elarton and senior Estelle Haugen.  The Red & Black
  • Athens-area high schools launched a vote for Week 1 football player of the week with standout nominees from several local teams who performed well last Friday. The poll remains open until Sunday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m.—future nominations will be sent to Sara Tidwell.  Athens Banner-Herald
