  • Preservationists said the UGA President’s House, an iconic Athens antebellum home, was at risk for demolition—despite a developer assuring it will be preserved by adding a hotel behind it. Community members, including a business owner turned voting commissioner, remain divided—local residents express skepticism about the redevelopment plans.  WUGA

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 26, a 23-year-old man led a high-speed chase from downtown Athens through Madison County and his truck hit a patrol vehicle twice before he fled on foot — he was later arrested and remains in jail facing felony charges including aggravated assault on a police officer.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Sororities at UGA hosted the Preference Round of sorority rush on Aug 16 in Athens— the last recruitment event before Bid Day, where potential new members met active sisters to learn about joining.  The Red & Black

  • The Clarke County School District Board of Education voted on Aug. 14 to name Cedar Shoals High School baseball field after former coach James Holsten—who started the school’s baseball program—and approved a new wing at Gaines Elementary School with construction set to begin on Sept. 1 and finish by Aug. 1, 2026.  The Red & Black
