  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Bear Hollow Zoo (293 Gran Ellen Dr.) is temporarily closed for guest safety after a hazardous tree was identified, and it will re-open once the tree is removed.  Classic City News

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens man aged 35—Jeremiah Williams—was arrested today after a doorbell camera recorded him throwing a dog into a staircase railing outside his West Broad Street apartment; police charged him with aggravated cruelty to animals and possession offenses—actions that led to his detention without bail.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UGA is opening an independent School of Nursing in Athens after the Board of Regents approved the plan in May, with its first students expected in fall 2027. The university will work with Augusta University to develop a comprehensive plan to address Georgia’s nursing shortage — starting with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  The Red & Black
  • The Clarke County School District said scores on the 2025 Georgia Milestones tests improved in all subjects, with third grade reading at 61% and notable gains in math, science, and social studies for many students. Interim Superintendent Jennifer Scott said the district focused on retaining high-expectation teachers—helping students, including Black students and those with disabilities, reach pre-pandemic levels.  The Red & Black

  • Georgia football QB Gunner Stockton partnered with Athens Area Humane Society to share a video where he gently cared for rescued dogs and cats — his involvement follows his recent adoption of a mixed-breed dog named Moose.   • Georgia football safety KJ Bolden is taking on a leadership role as a sophomore in the secondary after Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson left for the NFL—he is learning to lead his teammates with guidance from their past experience.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia women’s soccer team lost 0-1 to UCLA at Turner Soccer Complex on August 15 — their season opener ended in defeat and they will face the University of Albany on August 17 at the same venue.  The Red & Black
