COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government invites Athens-area artists to submit proposals for public art murals on the exteriors of the Lay Park Community Center — which is celebrating 50 years of service — and the Heard Park Community Center, with a deadline on September 19 at 5:00 p.m. The chosen artist will work with local stakeholders and government staff to create art that enhances these centers.  Athens-Clarke County

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke police are investigating two fraud cases as a Decatur businessman lost $304,000 after a woman and an unknown man used his personal information to access his Wells Fargo account on June 30 and July 3 plus a 75-year-old Athens businessman was scammed out of $198,000 when two unknown men obtained his account credentials from a phone call on July 30.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 13th, 2025, UGA began its fall semester as students returned to campus in Athens and filled the sidewalks and buildings. Photos show activity near the Ramsey Student Center — a busy start to the new term.  The Red & Black
  • The University of Georgia welcomed its record-setting class of 2029 this week. More than 6,200 students enrolled from nearly 48,000 applicants plus 15,800 were accepted, setting a new record in admissions and drawing top students from across the state and abroad.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football added transfer safety Adrian Maddox from UAB as he competes with JaCorey Thomas for a starting position after NFL departures—Coach Kirby Smart said Maddox is showing progress in preseason after 15 spring workouts.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football will begin the 2025 season on Aug. 30 with a home game in Athens against Marshall at 7 p.m., and the Bulldogs will face major teams like Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida as they chase a second SEC championship and third national title in five years. Fans can watch home games on TV and a final contest in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium—ticket sales are underway.  Athens Banner-Herald
