CRIME NEWS

  • Athens police are asking for new leads in the nearly nine-year-old murder of 28-year-old Daniel Macias, who was found shot in downtown Athens on August 13, 2016 near North Jackson Street and Hancock Avenue—police and his family are offering rewards to help identify a man described as a white individual in black.  FOX 5 Atlanta

  • Tonight is the last night of the Perseid meteor shower's peak and Georgia stargazers may see 10 to 20 meteors per hour—though the nearly full Moon and local cloud cover may limit views.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clarke County public high schools gave more than 800 seniors a $1,000 investment portfolio on Aug. 7, with the condition that they attend financial literacy lessons and complete surveys to claim their investments when they turn 18—tech entrepreneur Farhad Mohit and Gifted Savings initiated the project to help guide students toward future prosperity. Researchers from the University of Georgia will track its impact as Athens works to secure long-term funding for the program.  Flagpole

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved a $3.87 billion operating budget that includes $11.9 million to start up a new UGA medical school and $34.5 million for the fourth phase of campus upgrades at Science and Ag Hill in Athens—funds that will support enrollment growth and enhanced facilities starting next July. The regents also approved a $197.7 million capital budget to fund other high-priority projects.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • David Manuel received a life-saving liver transplant on August 12—rescuing him from acute liver failure. He and his wife Karren now share their moving story while board-certified physician Dr. Shani Clay explains liver disease signs, symptoms, and treatments.  FOX 5 Atlanta

SPORTS NEWS

  • Glenn Schumann said the Bulldogs will fix their run defense by stressing better tackling after the team gave up more yards per run and missed 121 tackles last season—he said that proper tackling will help the team be steadier in stopping runs.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia plans to rename two existing gates at Sanford Stadium to honor alumni donors if the Board of Regents vote approves, with the change set for the current football season. Gate 10 would become the Toby and Alisa Tate Family Gate while Gate 9 would be renamed the Mark and Andrea Kauffman Plaza — honors meant to recognize contributions to improve athletic facilities.  FOX 5 Atlanta
