CRIME NEWS

  • A homeless woman was arrested at the Classic Center on August 3 after a 54-year-old employee saw her completely naked in a stairwell—Jana Russell threatened to stab the employee with a toothbrush and now faces charges of simple assault, public indecency, and criminal trespass.  Classic City News
  • James King (a 56-year-old homeless man) was critically injured after a fight outside Golden Pantry on Prince Avenue on August 3 when Tyderius LaJason Moon reportedly beat him and threw a brick at his head; police later arrested Moon, who now faces aggravated assault and battery charges and will have a bail hearing on September 12.  Classic City News

  • Georgia legislators are reviewing data on chronic absenteeism as Sen. John Kennedy leads a study noting that one in five public school students missed at least 10% of school days last year—affecting over 360,000 students. The committee will use this information to inform policy changes in the upcoming legislative session in January.  WUGA

  • The preseason AP Top 25 poll released on August 11 shows ten SEC teams ranked, with Texas led by Heisman Trophy candidate Arch Manning topping the list — the first time the Longhorns have been chosen as No. 1, while Georgia sits at No. 5; additional teams include Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.  Athens Banner-Herald
