  • Every graduating senior from Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central and Classic City High Schools was surprised by the announcement today—each will receive a $1K investment portfolio and financial lessons through a new partnership with Gifted Savings and TED-Ed.   • On August 22nd and 23rd, the Great Southeast Pollinator Census will invite citizen scientists of all ages to join the count of pollinators in our region.   • Mayor Kelly Girtz leads Athens-Clarke County by setting policies, approving budgets, and holding public meetings at City Hall on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. New residents such as UGA students can learn about local government roles & get involved by using the official ACCGov resources.  The Red & Black

HEALTH NEWS

  • A healthcare symposium held last weekend in Athens-Clarke County brought local nonprofit providers & community officials together to discuss ways to improve access for uninsured patients in healthcare deserts. Local leaders stressed the need for additional funding and creative solutions as rising costs threaten coverage for many residents.  WUGA
  • On July 25th, an Athens police officer talked a suicidal woman off her plan when she was seen holding a knife near the Baxter Street library and later at a gas station—he listened to her account of recent hardships before national EMS transported her to the hospital.
