COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens nonprofit the Ark is holding its Summer of Stability fundraiser to help low-income families avoid evictions and utility disconnections during the summer—program coordinator Ashley Stewart said the organization has received over 270 assistance requests since June 1, a 50% increase from last year’s 180 requests. The fundraiser aims to support families hit by unexpected financial emergencies to prevent homelessness.  WUGA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Steve Penley, a local UGA art school graduate, painted a portrait honoring the last five UGA football coaches including Athens natives Jim Donnan, Ray Goff, and Vince Dooley and featuring current coach Kirby Smart with former coach Mark Richt. At an event at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, Smart surprised football staffer Bryant Gantt by presenting his painted portrait—recognizing his 15 years of service to the team.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced his plan to run for governor on August 6th—he said he will support working families, improve healthcare, and help schools.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Athens native Michael Thurmond, a former labor commissioner, announced his bid for governor yesterday. He will run against candidates including former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and state Sen. Jason Esteves—promising to improve education and healthcare amid a hyper-partisan environment.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Capital Projects Department invites Stonehenge residents to provide input on planned $3.2 million improvements to enhance safety and accessibility along old Monroe Road and nearby streets. Residents can use an online survey or attend an open house at Fire Station 2 on August 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.—input will be accepted until August 31.  Athens-Clarke County

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A $120 million retirement complex called Celebration Village will start site work this month on a 62 acre lot near Oconee Connector with about 400 units including bungalows, independent living apartments and assisted care units. The project by Active Senior Concepts will offer amenities like a swimming pool, walking trails, indoor games and a fishing lake—its first phase of 96 independent living bungalows is planned for 2026 to 2027.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Georgia basketball has set SEC game dates for the upcoming season in coach Mike White’s fourth year as the Bulldogs work to return to the NCAA Tournament—Auburn and Bruce Pearl will visit Athens on Jan 3 and the team will face Florida on Jan 6 or 7. The SEC released its schedule on Aug 6 and weeknight game times and TV details will be finalized later.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football offensive coordinator Mike Bobo announced that transfers Noah Thomas and Zachariah Branch will join the team to improve the passing game after the offense dropped passes and threw interceptions last season—he said the Bulldogs will start games faster and focus on consistent, short-yard gains.  Athens Banner-Herald
