  • One Church, One Family is a new initiative in Athens that gives local churches a bigger role in keeping families and individuals housed in the fight against homelessness. Volunteer Paul Lazzari said the project began yesterday—aiming to strengthen community efforts to help those in need.  WUGA

CRIME NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered on Saturday to honor D’Anthony Reaves—father to 12 biological and eight stepchildren—who was shot outside the Greyhound bus station on Forsyth Street on July 19 and whose family now calls for change.  FOX 5 Atlanta

  • AthFest Music & Arts Festival in June raised more than $65K to support K-12 music and arts education in local schools. The three-day event used ticket sales, merchandise, and donations—helping cover a nearly $40K grant shortfall—and saw Tropical Breeze Steel Band raise a record $1,700 to earn a main stage slot for next year.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens fantasy author T.M. May won the Georgia Author of the Year Award from the Georgia Writers Association in June for his self-published debut novel Alan Dreams of Giants—about how imagination helps ease grief and isolation—, a win that highlights his fresh voice in the genre.  WUGA

  • Clarke Central defensive lineman Anthony 'AJ' Lonon Jr. committed to Georgia on Saturday for the (2026 class) after his father once hesitated to let him play and his mother helped him explore teams, and he became a varsity starter as a freshman while earning a (4.2 GPA) and serving as class vice president.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • UNC quarterback Max Johnson, an Athens native, returned to practice on August 2 after a severe leg injury that required five surgeries. He is fully recovered and battling for the starting job — facing competition from Gio Lopez as team drills continue.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • North Oconee receiver Dallas Dickerson, a 6 foot 1 and three star recruit who helped win the first ever GHSA state championship in 2024, announced he will join Kentucky's football program for the class of 2026—making him the tenth hard commit and third wide receiver on the team.  Athens Banner-Herald
