- ➤ Rakeim Jaquin Hillsman, 31, and Jemeka Joanna Moon, 27, were indicted for a driveby shooting on Dwight Road on April 30th—Hillsman faces charges of aggravated assault, driveby shooting, and firearm possession by a felon while Moon faces charges of aggravated assault, driveby shooting, and fleeing from police—and a resident said the attack targeted her over a dispute with Hillsman's sister, and they will be arraigned on August 11th. - ➤ The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation will host its statewide Historic Preservation Conference in Athens from Nov. 5 to 7, with early bird registration ending Sept. 1. - ➤ Athens town leaders met on July 26 at the Miriam Moore Community Center to talk about gun violence. Mayor Kelly Girtz and Commissioner Tiffany Taylor said Athens had six months without a murder—yet 436 shootings from 2021 to 2024 hurt or killed 138 people—and they urged safe gun storage to protect everyone.
