CULTURE NEWS

  • The Athens Goes Acoustic Festival was held on July 26 at Athentic Brewing Company and featured 10 local acts with vendor tables for food and goods. Organized by Ana Wagner and Steven Casto, part of the ticket sales went to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia.  The Red & Black
  • Last week, Athens held a No Phone Party & Taco Party at Hendershot’s on July 22 where Kenosha Kid played music and Seth Hendershot drummed, while a student orientation leader's day was shared at Tate Student Center on July 23. The Athens Goes Acoustic Festival took place on July 26 at Athentic Brewing Company with bands, vendors, and local acts like Full on Monet, Mother of Stitches, and Stratton James performing.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carlee Steppe, a conservation botanist, said native plants help reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides and protect local wildlife from habitat fragmentation — a rising issue as private lands replace natural habitats. Local experts urge private landowners to support local nurseries to grow and propagate these plants, which also save water and prevent erosion.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Prosecutor Shelia Ross, who handled the case against Jose Ibarra for killing UGA student Laken Riley, was honored with the President’s Award for Excellence by district attorneys at the statewide conference held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center — she has also prosecuted cases in Georgia, California, and Florida.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Daily Groceries Co-op at 1190 Prince Ave in Athens offers freshly made lunches including classic, vegetarian, and vegan sandwiches along with locally made desserts and drinks.
