  • On July 23, Milton Johnson, a 67-year-old homeless man on Gaines School Road, was threatened by a man who demanded his money and showed a gun after he refused—police later searched for the suspect after he fled into the nearby College Glen apartment complex.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nursing students from technical colleges will be allowed to transfer directly into select four-year public colleges and universities to complete their BSN without losing credits—an agreement made under House Bill 192 aims to ease the nursing shortage after many nurses left during the pandemic.  WUGA
  • Dalton Carpet One hosted its annual Teacher Appreciation Event on July 21 at its showrooms in Athens, Lake Oconee and Buford—welcoming 200 teachers from about 80 schools and providing school supplies and carpet samples.   • Prosecutor Sheila Ross received the President’s Award for Excellence at a summer conference on Jekyll Island for her work prosecuting the murder case of Laken Riley in Clarke County in 2024 — her leadership was praised by District Attorney Randy McGinley and other legal officials from across Georgia.   • Fair Fight Action launched a voter purge lookup tool on its website to help Georgians check if they are at risk of being removed from the voter rolls—its release comes after Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger warned nearly 480,000 voters that their registrations could be canceled if they did not respond within 40 days.   • The Athens-Clarke County government offers tips to help residents reduce mosquito bites and lower the risk of diseases by removing standing water and using insect repellent.
