COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens Regional Library is hosting a celebration today from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.—organized by the Multiple Choices Center for Independent Living to mark the ADA's 35th anniversary, a law signed on July 26th, 1990 that promotes equal opportunity for people with disabilities.  WUGA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County is asking local artists to submit mural designs for Lay Park and Heard Park community centers by 5 p.m. on Sept. 19 as the parks celebrate their 50th anniversaries—selected designs will be commercially printed and installed with help from county staff and community stakeholders.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Last week, SEC Media Days took place in Atlanta where Georgia players and coaches answered reporters while the New Orleans Jazz Stompers performed at the State Botanical Garden during the Sunflower Concert Series. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A three-member committee from the Clarke County School District Board will meet Friday at 9:00 a.m. at 595 Prince Avenue + open to the public to discuss new rules that let district officials and community members suggest facility names and allow public comments. The rule change follows controversy over the renaming of two elementary schools in 2023.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ACCGov Elections Department will conduct a Risk-Limiting Audit of the July 15 special primary runoff starting on July 24 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.—the audit will continue on July 25 if needed. The audit is open to the public and will be held at the Athens-Clarke County Facilities Management Building on Lexington Road—this process follows state code and election board rules.  Athens-Clarke County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas added five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and four-star defensive lineman James Johnson to its 2026 recruiting class after both had been linked with Georgia. Georgia coach Kirby Smart said his team will build relationships over transactions—setting the stage for the Nov. 15 game in Athens.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football has put single game tickets on sale for three nonconference home games at Sanford Stadium—Marshall on Aug 30, Austin Peay on Sept 6, and Charlotte on Nov 22. Tickets in the upper deck cost between $60 and $75 and the Austin Peay game offers seats for $105—other high-demand SEC games are available only through the secondary market at much higher prices.  Athens Banner-Herald
