COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank president of Northeast Georgia invited Athens neighbors to help support food distribution during Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations while urging everyone to act on food insecurity. The organization provided 4,479,514 meals in 2024 and already distributed 3 million pounds of food in Athens-Clarke County in 2025—calling on the community to step up as hunger grows.  Classic City News
  • Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement will host a free workshop on Tuesday, July 29, from 5:30—7 p.m. at the ACC Library to address community concerns stemming from recent in-custody deaths and poor jail conditions. The event will explain how to advocate for inmates' rights and navigate the jail system amid staffing shortages.  The Red & Black

CRIME NEWS

  • Butler Community College defensive lineman Seven Dantravious Cloud, who committed to Georgia football, faces domestic violence charges following an April 20 domestic battery incident and a March 27 disorderly conduct and property damage incident in Butler County — he has a court date set for Sept. 22.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eastside’s Mochinut introduces off-menu options celebrating its Chinese-Indonesian heritage. The restaurant offers unique dishes that add cultural variety to Athens where chain restaurants fill both historic storefronts and strip malls.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tim Denson, a longtime local politician serving on the Clarke County School District Board of Education and as a team lead at the Athens Homeless Day Service Center, announced in June that he is running for Athens' next mayor. He hopes to bring a bias towards action to city leadership.  WUGA
  • Dexter Fisher, who has served District 5 on the Athens-Clarke County Commission since 2023 after a lengthy public service career, announced his run for mayor in June and said he will speed up TSPLOST projects if elected—he hopes to fix key county issues as the mayoral election nears. The race is just under a year away.  WUGA
  • Diane Russell, who has supported Judge Lawton Stephens at the Superior Court for 34 years, was honored with the Liberty Bell Award by the Western Circuit Bar for her community service. She is retiring at the end of this month (with Judge Stephens praising her professionalism and legal expertise), leaving a significant mark on the court.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Family Destinations Guide released a list of six no-fuss burger joints in Georgia that serve great food with simple ingredients. The review praised Athens’ Clocked! for its funky vibe and creative burger options—like a peanut butter burger and a veggie patty—and noted its generous, crispy fries as a local favorite.  Athens Banner-Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • CCI secured a $67 million construction loan to redevelop the Baptist Collegiate Ministries building at UGA into the 290 Lumpkin project near downtown Athens — which will add over 240 apartments, retail space, and gathering areas. Construction began and is expected to finish in June 2027 with New South Construction as the general contractor.  Classic City News
