- ➤ Historic Athens Porchfest registration is open now for performers, hosts, and sponsors until Aug. 1 at noon—this free, grassroots music festival is set for Oct. 19 and will showcase acoustic performances across Athens neighborhoods such as Boulevard, Buena Vista Heights, Cobbham, Newtown, Normaltown, Pulaski Heights, and Reese-Hancock. The event also offers 200 porch sponsorships and new porch bundles on a first-come, first-serve basis to promote local participation. The Red & Black
- ➤ Athens Farmers Market has served the community for over a decade — rising costs and growing demand now lead organizers to ask for local support. Donations will help keep the market a space for fresh produce, community programs and vendor support. Classic City News

- ➤ Authorities said 21-year-old Stephen Ford—of Athens—was charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI, and failure to yield after his 2005 Chevrolet truck struck 38-year-old Jennifer McKillip at North Thomas and East Hancock early Sunday as she rode her Yamaha motorbike; McKillip died at a hospital after the collision. - ➤ Police arrested a 59-year-old homeless woman after she stabbed 56-year-old Deborah Williams at the Athens Gardens apartment complex on July 8th at about 8 p.m.—residents said she attacked Williams during a food dispute, tried to flee, and now faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a knife. - ➤ Money released its annual best colleges list rating over 700 four-year schools on quality, affordability, and student outcomes; among 17 Georgia schools, Georgia Tech earned five stars while Emory and the University of Georgia earned 4.5 stars. Augusta University had the highest acceptance rate and Georgia Tech had the highest graduation rate, with costs ranging from $10,000 to $86,780 (figures include average aid and full price metrics). - ➤ Athens-Clarke County government invites current 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who live in Athens to apply for the Mayor's Youth Council by August 17, with candidates set for interviews in late August and a first meeting in September. - ➤ Samuel Gribbon—Puma Yu's sous chef—is battling cancer after a colonoscopy last Wednesday found a tumor blocking his colon, and he is now meeting with specialists while he and his partner Eson face high bills and a possible move for better care.
