  • Cura cocktail bar opened on Thursday, July 10 in Athens — the new lounge by Creature Comforts offers various cocktails to local patrons. The launch marks the company's effort to expand its hospitality services in town.  The Red & Black
  • Shake Shack has submitted plans to fix up the old Gusto restaurant at 161 Alps Road — next to Cava and Chipotle. The proposal will be reviewed on July 17 and work will start if it is approved.  Athens Banner-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 10th just before midnight, staff found an inmate unresponsive in her cell at the Madison County Detention Center and despite life-saving measures she died after being transported to Piedmont Athens Regional—GBI is investigating the death of Tina Marie Patton, 39, from Colbert.  Classic City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens Restaurant Week will run from Monday, July 14 through Saturday, July 20 and is set to be its biggest yet with 63 businesses (from cafés to breweries and dessert spots) offering discounted menus. Locals can explore an expanded culinary scene and support local restaurants during the event.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Library turned on seven solar trackers on May 20, which now supply about 20% of the library’s energy needs—roughly the same amount used by 27 homes. The project is funded by SPLOST 2011 Project 23 and SPLOST 2020 Project 11 and supports the county’s goal to reach 100% renewable energy by 2035.  WUGA

  • WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg will wrestle his final match today at State Farm Arena in Atlanta against WWE's Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship—Goldberg said Gunther disrespected him at a past event, making the bout personal as he closes his career in his hometown.  FOX 5 Atlanta
