CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jose Ibarra, convicted of murdering nursing student Laken Riley near the University of Georgia campus earlier this year, was ordered by Judge Patrick Haggard to undergo a publicly funded mental evaluation — his defense raised concerns about his competency for post-conviction proceedings. - ➤ A 31-year-old inmate at Athens-Clarke County Jail died Tuesday morning after staff found him unresponsive in his cell—his death is the third at the jail this year and officials have asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the unknown medical issue. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on Cesar David Maradiaga Gomez, 25, after he was arrested on June 30th on Chalfont Lane in Athens during a dominoes game altercation that led to charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony—he remained at the county jail on Tuesday awaiting transfer. - ➤ On July 8, 2025, around 5:00 p.m., staff at Athens-Clarke County Jail found a 28-year-old white male unresponsive and later a 36-year-old African American male in another cell; both were taken by EMS and ACCFD to area hospitals for evaluation of suspected drug overdoses—jail officials discovered suspected drugs in the housing unit. - ➤ Georgia law requires drivers to use the left lane only for passing — drivers must move over if someone is faster, and violators risk fines up to $1,000 plus three license points. Exceptions apply when turning left, exiting, or facing heavy traffic or poor weather. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ For three years, some Athens customers have faced high water bills that were not adjusted through the water appeals board, and judges sided with customers in court. The new Watershed commissioner said problems exist plus fixes are planned. FOX 5 Atlanta
