- ➤ Athens Area Habitat for Humanity broke ground Monday, June 30 at Micah’s Creek to build 40 single-family homes, 15 two-bedroom bungalows, and 11 tiny homes+Lydia’s Place will house working students while tiny homes serve veterans, artists and musicians. The project is fully funded with over $9 million from state, federal and municipal funds+phase one is set to finish by the end of 2026 as donations are still being accepted to meet its fundraising goal. - ➤ Firefly Trail Inc. received a $2.9M federal and state grant to pave a new 4.5 mile section between Maxeys and Greene County—helping to expand the trail from Athens to Union Point. Athens-Clarke County is currently finishing the stretch between Hancock Road and Winterville. WUGA

- ➤ Last Thursday night, Winterville resident Leon Leathers was arrested in Athens after he fired two rounds from his SUV at pedestrians on Pulaski Street in Pulaski Heights — he admitted to being under the influence and faced charges for reckless conduct and DUI. Classic City News
- ➤ Dwan Maurice Hewlett, 41, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for armed drug trafficking in Athens—he was convicted on six charges including distributing fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and crack with no chance of parole. FOX 5 Atlanta
