COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services announced a free Firefly Discovery Ride for riders aged eight and older on Saturday, June 28 from 10:00 a.m. to noon + children must be accompanied by an adult. The event will highlight the history and future plans of the Firefly Trail and North Oconee River Greenway so locals can see their bike trail system from a new angle.  Classic City News

  • A Watkinsville man was charged with DUI after his truck caused two wrecks on Highway 78 on June 6 — witnesses report he admitted to being drunk by saying 'Out like eight track. So' when questioned.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • A burglar made four attempts in the early hours of June 12 to break into an Athens store on West Broad Street—he stole cash and cigarettes and then fled south on Minor Street as police review the surveillance footage.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, Athens marked Juneteenth with an afternoon of music, art and local food vendors outside City Hall. Today and this weekend, AthFest brings free mainstage shows, artist markets and kids' activities downtown—while Monster Jam at Akins Ford Arena offers thrilling truck stunts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The Red & Black
  • The Athens Juneteenth Music and Art Festival took place on June 19 in downtown Athens near City Hall (from 3 to 7 p.m.) and featured live music by Pastor Troy, an Afro dance party, a community conversation with Mikhayla Robinson and Linda Davis, and a collaborative mural painting session led by local artist Breanna Jackson. Hosts from the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement and the Colored Only Cafe (started by Courtney and Davon Doss) provided food donations and support throughout the event.  The Red & Black
  • Community activists Fred Parham—who grew up celebrating Juneteenth in Texas—and Makungu and Chinganji Akinyela discussed the cultural and historical significance of the holiday with Portia on June 19, emphasizing that everyone should honor its legacy.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Lyndon House Arts Center is hosting the Controlled Burn exhibition by Tom Schram, which uses recycled post-consumer materials to explore how society wastes resources. The free exhibition runs through August 30 during regular gallery hours — Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Classic City News

  • Cameron Stockton graduated from the Athens-Clarke County Jail Re-Entry Success Program for the third time on June 18 and said the training gave him a new way to move forward. He will soon return to jail to serve another four months—then he plans to work with Bush Properties and start his own remodeling business.  The Red & Black
  • Jennifer Scott is named interim superintendent of the Clarke County School District as former superintendent Robbie Hooker retires on June 30 — she has worked in various district roles since 1998. Scott will lead the schools and meet with students and staff until a permanent superintendent is chosen — her long career and ties to the community support her new role.  The Red & Black
